Chapter 5 Job Ranks
Chapter 5 Job Ranks
After the first class in the afternoon, the students of Class 3 left the classroom in twos and threes and headed towards the training hall.
"Time for another practical lesson."
Liu Hao sighed, looking as if he were about to be executed.
Practical training sessions are usually conducted by two classes together, with each class sending one student to pair up and compete against each other.
In yesterday's practical class, Liu Hao was unlucky and was matched against Pei Xuan from Class 1.
The latter is a renowned genius of the Second Academy. He successfully changed his profession more than half a year ago and is a relatively rare magic gunner with formidable strength.
As a blade warrior, Liu Hao, with his short arms, was attacked by a barrage of bullets before he could even reach Pei Xuan, suffering quite a bit of pain.
"Hopefully we'll be matched with an easier opponent today."
Liu Hao clasped his hands together in a strange manner and muttered something under his breath.
Lin Ze ignored him, preoccupied with his own thoughts.
The training has been going on for twenty days now, and the results have been remarkable.
During last night's training, Jingzhe was able to maintain its maximum launch speed for nearly twenty minutes.
Lin Ze had a vague intuition that he might be able to master the Lightning Reflex talent tonight.
Following the flow of people to the training hall, Lin Ze went inside and found that today's opposing class had already assembled.
"They're from Class 5." Liu Hao grimaced as if he had a toothache.
Class 5's overall strength is not much better than Class 3's, but they have two geniuses who are on par with Pei Xuan.
One is Zhuang Yi, a Sword Soul class.
One is Tang Wangshu, a talisman master.
Like Pei Xuan, the two of them had successfully changed jobs more than half a year ago, putting them far ahead of other students.
Lin Ze's gaze fell on a girl in the Class 5 group.
The girl was eighteen or nineteen years old. Her long, straight black hair on the left side was tied into three small braids. Her outfit was both youthful and fashionable, and she was at an age where she was gradually transforming from the innocence of a young girl to the sexiness of an adult. These two qualities were intertwined at the same time.
She was just standing quietly in the corner, yet she already attracted the furtive glances of many boys.
"I heard that Tang Wangshu has an elder in the family who holds a high-ranking position in the military and has planned her career path since she was a child."
Liu Hao also looked at Tang Wangshu immediately, his face showing undisguised envy.
"That's great! I also want to switch to a Rune Master. The potential of a B-rank profession is much higher than that of a Blade Warrior."
In the Seven Luminaries Federation, professions are divided into five categories, A through E, based on their potential.
Grade A jobs have the highest potential, while Grade E jobs have the lowest potential.
Talisman masters belong to rank B.
Although it's not the top-tier A-level profession, it's still much better than the vast majority of students who can only advance to E-level or D-level.
In fact, the conditions for changing jobs to D-rank or higher are basically controlled by legions and guilds, and ordinary people have no access to them at all.
The monopoly of scarce resources by the upper class is an ironclad rule in any world.
Of course, in Lin Ze's view, the so-called professional level classification is nothing more than a frog in a well, arbitrarily distinguishing between superior and inferior.
What are A-level and B-level professions? They can't even compare to the worst two-star professions, let alone higher-star professions.
Jingle Bell!
The school bell rang.
Lu Kui strode in.
Thirty-eight-year-old Lü Kui is broad-shouldered and muscular, resembling a fierce brown bear.
It is said that he served in the legion in his early years and almost got promoted to second lieutenant, but he was later discharged due to injury and voluntarily applied to teach at the professional academy.
Because of this, Lü Kui was highly respected among the students.
As soon as he appeared, the students immediately fell silent, and no one dared to whisper to each other.
Standing in front of the students, Lü Kui glanced around and, without wasting words, got straight to the point.
"Let's begin class. As before, pair up according to your class and seat number. Group 1 will go first."
As Lü Kui finished speaking, one student from each of the two classes stepped forward and stood face to face in the open space in the middle.
"Begin," Lü Kui said in a deep voice.
The two students exchanged a glance and attacked almost simultaneously, quickly engaging in a fierce battle.
The hall was immediately filled with the crisp sound of metal clashing and the piercing whistling of steel.
Although it was supposed to be a class, the two fought fiercely, using sharpened weapons and showing no restraint except for not aiming at vital points.
In fact, after each practical lesson, quite a few students are injured and bleeding.
Fortunately, the academy arranged for healing professionals to be present, and as long as the injury was not serious, it could be healed on the spot.
The battle was decided in just over two minutes.
Then came the second group, the third group... Each group lasted at least one or two minutes, and at most four or five minutes, before the winner was basically decided.
When it was Pei Xuan and Tang Wangshu's turn to appear, although their opponents were also students who had successfully changed jobs, the two of them still defeated their opponents decisively and easily, showing that they were in complete control.
Ten minutes later, it was Lin Ze's turn to play.
Cao Jin from Class 5 walked onto the field with his longbow, his face looking somewhat bitter.
"Lin Ze, go easy on me, don't embarrass me too much," Cao Jin said with a wry smile.
His goal for changing jobs is to become a sharpshooter, and his skills and talents are all geared towards ranged attacks and archery. In previous combat classes, he could always keep his opponents from raising their heads with his fast shooting ability.
But everything changed after last week's practical lesson, when the opponent became Lin Ze.
This guy must have some kind of talent; his reflexes are incredibly fast, and he always manages to dodge my arrows in time.
Especially in their recent encounters, Lin Ze has become even more agile in dodging, and he hasn't been able to hit Lin Ze even once, leaving him so frustrated that he felt like vomiting blood.
Lin Ze chuckled and agreed, but once the battle began, he showed no mercy. He easily dodged Cao Jin's three attacks, then closed in and placed his sword against Cao Jin's neck, ending the fight.
"Lin Ze wins, next group."
Lu Kui glanced at Lin Ze, a slight doubt creeping into his heart.
He remembered that Lin Ze's target profession was Sword Soul, so he should have been training in Mind's Eye talent. But judging from Lin Ze's recent performance, it seemed more like he was training in some kind of reaction speed-related talent.
Could it be that you're looking to change your career path?
Lu Kui shook his head inwardly. With only ten days left until the graduation assessment, changing his job target at this point was simply too late and a complete waste of time.
Liu Hao followed Lin Ze onto the field.
Perhaps his prayers worked, because his opponent was significantly weaker and was easily defeated.
"I'm having good luck today."
Liu Hao raised an eyebrow at Lin Ze with a smug look.
After more than forty battles, it was almost time for school to end.
Lu Kui clapped his hands, drawing everyone's attention.
"The college will be on holiday until the graduation assessment. Students who have not yet successfully changed jobs should work harder, and those who have already successfully changed jobs should not slack off. Strive to go further and get good results in the graduation assessment."
"The better your grades, the higher the rank you'll receive when you join the legion after graduation."
"Yes, teacher."
The students responded in unison, many with expressions of excitement and anticipation on their faces.
A hint of satisfaction flashed in Lü Kui's eyes as he announced the end of the get out of class.
Lin Ze and Liu Hao left the training hall side by side and walked towards the academy gate.
"Lin Ze, are you going to the training hall again today?" Liu Hao asked.
Lin Ze nodded: "You've been doing well lately."
"That's good." Liu Hao patted Lin Ze on the shoulder with a smile. "I'm looking forward to you joining the legion with me."
Lin Ze smiled, but out of the corner of his eye he caught a glimpse of a familiar figure flashing by in the distance, and his gaze immediately sharpened.
"What's wrong?" Liu Hao asked.
"It's nothing." Lin Ze shook his head. "Then I'll be going now."
"Okay, see you tomorrow."
"See you tomorrow."
After parting ways with Liu Hao, Lin Ze headed straight for the training hall. Using the reflections from the glass mirrors along the way, he indeed spotted the figure sneaking up on him.
Lin Ze smiled wryly, not caring, and let the other party follow behind.
This is the central area, the Legion's territory. Unless they want to die together with him, they will never make a move here.
