Chapter 14 The Misfortune Swamp Dungeon: Trif's Magic Mirror
Chapter 14 The Misfortune Swamp Dungeon: Trif's Magic Mirror
News of the emergence of an underground city at the border between the Academy and the Twisted Treeline spread rapidly among the apprentices.
Everyone on the streets was talking about the underground city, and some people had even found out that it was called the Doom Swamp.
While Suen was having a meal in the canteen, he overheard three apprentices arguing at the next table.
"The Academy will definitely reclaim this dungeon. Doom Marsh is part of the Kaldorei Temple, the largest sorcery library from the Classic era; it must contain the whereabouts of spiritual potions."
An apprentice retorted, "Spiritual elixirs are crucial for a formal wizard's advancement; the Twisted Forest will not concede."
"Lady Lafreya, the tower master of the Daytime Forge, has personally arrived in Feralas Valley, which is enough to show the academy's determination."
Upon hearing this, the three of them fell silent instantly.
The White-Day Furnace, one of the seven wizard towers under the High Tower, is skilled in fire magic. Suen was rejected when he applied because he was too weak.
Because the White Forge places the greatest emphasis on the development of forging science, most members need to undergo metalworking internships before they are qualified to learn meditation techniques.
Suen picked up her plate, stood up, put it in the recycling window, and left.
Sending a level-two wizard signifies that the Tower has decided to formally participate in the struggle for this underground city.
However, none of these things have a direct connection to him.
Suen swallowed the last bite of bread and got up to head to the Great Library.
The Great Library is located in the inner ring of Modo City. It is a circular building made of real silver stone, with no windows on the exterior walls, and looks like a giant seashell lying on the ground.
At the entrance to the gate, a sentence was written in Hermetic: "The most free are the ignorant."
Suen's goal for today was to borrow Celsus's "Basic Potions," but as he walked among the bookshelves, his gaze was inadvertently drawn to a book laid out on the reading table.
"A Brief History of the Borderlands," by Brian, a first-class wizard.
Suen glanced at it and noticed that Brian Wizard's writing wasn't very fluent; the book seemed more like a research notebook.
In his book, he argues that wizards should not merely acquire knowledge from existing textbooks—"Truth does not lie between the lines of the ancients, but must be explored through personal experience."
He viewed archaeology not as an ordinary skill, but as a necessary means to approach the truth.
Only by personally touching the relics of history can we avoid the errors that are added to the narratives of later generations.
The narrative about the history of the border region consists mostly of notes taken by the wizard Brian during his archaeological explorations.
Brian proposed that the Boundary is a triple intersection of geography, magic, and history.
Before the Great Cataclysm, in even more ancient times, other civilizations collapsed, fading into a thick fog of history.
"The seven major wizarding organizations are almost all located in the borderlands, surrounding the Abyss."
"This is no coincidence."
"Perhaps, the abyss is the source of magic..."
Suen turned the page, and the handwriting in the next paragraph suddenly became messy, or smudged with a bunch of ink blots.
"abyss......"
Suen closed the book, recalling the record of the concept.
According to relevant information, there is a bottomless abyss deep within the Endless Sea that devours all tangible things. It is a cursed and terrifying area filled with chaotic rules.
"This world seems to be controlled by an invisible hand; even a formal wizard within it finds it difficult to glimpse the truth!"
He put "A Brief History of the Borderlands" back where it belonged and went to the front desk to borrow "Fundamentals of Potions".
It was nearly afternoon when we returned to the Crown of Oaks.
Suen saw a person standing on the stone steps at the entrance of the camp from afar. The person's gray apprentice robe was open, and the person was holding a palm-sized mirror in their hand.
Upon closer inspection, I realized it was Deitz.
"Long time no see, Deitz!"
Detz raised his head; the freckles on his face were still the same few, but his entire demeanor had changed.
The dark circles under his eyes were gone, and his shoulders were no longer slumped as they used to be.
A section of exquisite dark brown cloth armor peeked out from under his apprentice robe, and several leather pouches, bulging and full, were now at his waist, their contents unknown.
"It's been several days, Suen, how are you?" Deitz grinned at Suen.
Suen's gaze lingered on him for a moment, then she suddenly noticed a subtle change.
Deitz's aura became more stable and unified, exuding an extraordinary aura.
Externalizing mental energy? Novice Apprentice!
"You've been promoted?"
Detz stood up, magic surging between his hands, and a soft white light shone in his palms. Zero-ring sorcery: Light Spell.
Although the spellcasting was not very skillful, it was indeed a complete form of witchcraft.
"I learned the basics quickly through magic crystals, but I'm not very good at using them yet."
Detz scratched his head somewhat shyly, then suddenly remembered something, took a belt from his waist, and handed it to Suen.
"An Explorer's Pouch, with a capacity of 3 standard units, is here for you, Suen!"
Su En's eyebrows twitched slightly, and she reached out to take it.
A magical artifact made from the leather of some kind of magical beast, it has a certain amount of space and can hold quite a lot of things.
Similar to the storage backpack Ross mentioned he received after joining the Scarlet Order, although it has a smaller capacity, it is equally expensive.
"I knew you wouldn't accept magic stones directly, so I chose this magical artifact for you and Rakham. Thank you for sharing my workload while I was on leave."
Deitz explained thoughtfully, and then recounted his experiences over this period of time.
After obtaining Thomas's Meteorite Wand, he ventured deep into the wilderness and amassed his first fortune.
After that, he traveled between the wilderness and the Goddess of Fortune's shop, and even joined an expedition team, reaping considerable rewards.
Not only did he pay off his newborn loan in one go, he also paid off the money he owed Maurice.
So much had happened in just one week that Su En couldn't help but marvel at it.
"The day before yesterday, I drew another Prism Potion, which directly promoted me to Elementary Apprentice."
"Every time I go out, with my magic wand in hand, I can take down those level-two magical beasts, like the Blackmane Beast and the Gale Wolf, in just a few moves."
When he said this, his voice carried a confidence that Su En had never seen before.
"You can join us if you'd like," Deitz leaned forward. "The team just happens to need someone who knows potions."
Suen was silent for a few seconds, and was just about to speak when Deitz interrupted her.
"Alright, whatever. But if you change your mind, come find me anytime."
Suen nodded. "Now that you have money, why not learn an extraordinary skill? Potions or alchemy, the profits in the wilderness are fluctuating... Be careful."
"I know, I know." Deitz patted Suen on the shoulder. "Things will be better once this busy period is over. By the way, could you also tell Rackham for me, and ask him to..."
Before he could finish speaking, the small mirror in his hand suddenly trembled.
A pale blue ripple appeared on the mirror's surface, and a blurry human face emerged: "Dez's All-Encompassing Card Game, one player needed, War Banner Tavern, come quick!"
"Here they come."
Deitz replied to the mirror, and the mirror immediately dimmed.
Suen's gaze fell on the mirror, the back of which was engraved with a circle of complex runes.
"This is the Trif Magic Mirror." Detz flipped the mirror over. "Each person takes one side, and they can communicate directly even across half of Mordor. It's indispensable in the wilderness."
He put the mirror in his pocket and glanced in the direction of the bus stop.
A griffin was being led out of its mount, its wings folded to its sides, its long beak pecking impatiently at the stone slabs on the ground.
"See you later, Suen. I wish you a speedy promotion!" Deitz patted Suen on the shoulder and walked towards the hippogriff.
He took a couple of steps, then turned back, pointed at the hippogriff, and said, "I definitely need to learn riding sometime. It's so much more fun riding my own mount."
The griffin spread its wings, raising a gust of wind carrying a fishy smell, and flew towards the city of Mordo.
Su En stood still for a moment, then turned and walked back to the dormitory.
