Chapter 64 A New Journey
Chapter 64 A New Journey
Inside the camp, Simon stuffed all the prepared supplies into his leather bag.
A few cans of food and some biscuits were prepared as provisions for the journey. Ammunition for firearms could not be neglected, and several sets of tattered skins were also prepared as spares.
He took out all the meat he had hunted as evidence of his crimes over the past few days and distributed it to the sinners in the camp.
Simon will not take them on this adventure, even though some of them are genuinely willing to follow. Simon politely declined, after all, they are going to risk being hunted down by the Empire to go to the second level, and they could die instantly without a trace if they are not careful.
Aside from Piqué and Flanye, who were cave raiders, Klein resolutely decided to follow Simon...
"If I hadn't met you, I might never have dreamed of leaving the abyss and returning to the human world." Klein smiled and patted Simon on the shoulder. "Since you've given me a glimmer of hope, no matter how slim that hope may be, I will try my best."
However, to Simon's surprise, Badal chose to stay this time.
The reason is simple: after witnessing the Hungry Angel and the Steam Armor, he realized the terror of the Abyss.
Life on the first level already made him feel like he was walking on thin ice, and there might be even more dangers waiting for them on the second level. Knowing his own limitations, he gave up on traveling with them and chose to stay on the first level.
Mr. Bell did not accompany them either.
Although he also wanted to see the monsters of the second layer of the abyss, he ultimately chose to stay. After all, the sinners like Badar needed a reliable person to guide them in their future lives, and he would continue hunting monsters until he faced his destined glorious death.
"Keep hunting, Simon." Bell patted Simon's shoulder heavily. "We'll meet again. As long as you keep hunting monsters, we'll still have a chance to reunite and fight side by side!"
Simon wanted to ask how he would get to the second level, but he ultimately didn't press the matter.
After all, Mr. Bell is a man with an inexplicable magic. The last time he descended from the sky with a simple harpoon, he helped him kill the predatory beast. The second time he suddenly appeared, he brought the cave raider Elphes and the opportunity to kill the hungry angel.
He always showed up when Simon needed him most.
"Well, I also want to stay..." Professor Loris said weakly as he dissected the game Mr. Bell had hunted. "My old bones can't take any more of this."
But I'm sorry, Professor Loris had no choice.
Simon was, after all, just a theoretical scholar, while Professor Loris was a top scholar in biology. Among them, only Professor Loris could make potions. Everyone else could stay on the first floor, but Professor Loris could not. He was the talent Simon needed most.
Breanne, inside the birdcage, spoke up: "You don't want to live a life of constant wandering, do you? Just endure it for a few days. Your life will be much more stable on the second floor."
Her words had a slightly calming effect; Professor Loris's emotions noticeably eased upon hearing the word "peace."
"Okay, okay..." he muttered, pouring the marrow of the hunted beast into his homemade vessel, continuing to reproduce the white injection with the simple bottles and jars.
The supplies in the camp were distributed, and it was time to part ways.
"Goodbye, boss. I'm sorry, I really don't have the guts to continue following you..." Badar lowered his head, his eyes filled with guilt.
"Don't call me boss anymore." Klein waved goodbye to him casually. "You should learn to be someone else's boss."
And so, the two groups parted ways.
In the dense forest, Simon deliberately chose a relatively easy-to-walk road to accommodate Professor Loris's progress.
He led the way, brandishing a harpoon and cutting down drooping vines and low branches to make it easier for everyone to pass.
Not only that, he also had a duty to keep an eye on Flani after she turned into a beast.
Although Flani is still covered in dark green scales, she is much more docile. According to Professor Loris, he has not yet reproduced the white injection. As long as Flani is fed some rotten meat regularly, she will become docile and will not attack others as violently as before.
Even so, Simon still took her with him, since only he could handle the little girl when she went crazy.
"How much longer do we have to run?" Professor Loris asked shakily, rubbing his thigh.
"A day and a half, someone will come to pick us up in a day and a half," Simon gave an accurate number.
They sent out the letter, which, according to Elphis, would arrive within two days, while the hot air balloon would need another half day to travel from the first level to the second.
Elphis would buy them almost a day, and the remaining day and a half would be up to them to work on their own.
Simon chose to avoid battle as much as possible, escaping engagement with the Empire and spending the next day and a half there.
However, he had a secret weapon: Brenée in the birdcage.
Brienne can dilate her pupils, thereby extending her field of vision. If Simon carries the birdcage around, she can detect whether there are enemies within a 100-meter range.
However, this special ability is also limited. According to Brienne, she can extend the distance to about 200 meters, but her eyes will also burn and become very sore. Under Simon's insistence, she can use the special ability to scout twice a day, but each time it must not exceed five seconds.
With Brienne around, they can at least reduce the probability of conflict with the Empire.
After traveling for three hours, the group sat down to rest in the shade of a tree.
"Is there something wrong with the path we've chosen?" Brienne asked from inside the birdcage. "Why do I feel like we're getting further and further away from the Great Abyss?"
"That's right, we are indeed moving away from the Great Hollow," Simon replied.
If the Empire suspects they are going to trade with the cave raiders, they will definitely seal off the Great Cavern. Staying near the Great Cavern is tantamount to walking into a trap.
Simon's plan was to get away from the Great Hollow first, scout out the situation before setting off, and then break out, trying to avoid direct conflict with the Empire's firepower.
Breanne looked somewhat disappointed: "So you want to avoid battle? I was looking forward to seeing you face off against the steam armor!"
"Just say you want me to die..."
"How could I bear to let you die?" A familiar smile appeared on Brienne's lips. "I'm still counting on you to help me find my true identity."
Just then, Klein, who had been silent all along, suddenly spoke:
"It's time for reconnaissance."
Simon nodded. It was time to use Brienne to "scout" the area to prevent anyone from following them.
"I really can't do anything with you guys, come on."
Simon, holding the birdcage, slowly spun around in place, while Brienne's pupils dilated, scanning the surrounding area within a radius of about one hundred meters.
Just as the reconnaissance was about to be completed, she suddenly issued a warning:
"There's someone following us at 11 o'clock."
